Sutter's Fort State Historic Park

Overview
Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park is a reconstructed museum that incorporates a part of the original fort. The fort was an important trading center in the 1840s, but the land was overrun by gold seekers and much of the fort was carried away or fell into disrepair. By the time of the 1890 reconstruction, only the large Central Building remained from the original fort.

The Fort Trade Store provides a large variety of authentic gifts and publications relating to California history, the Overland Trail, and Gold Rush. Special events at the fort are scheduled throughout the year. Phone (916) 445-4422 for more information.

Exhibits/Programs
Firm earthen paths leading up to and throughout the fort are accessible. Assistance may be required with length or slope of paths of travel from street parking to the fort entry. Several interior ramps and mini-ramps into rooms have been added and historic doorway thresholds have been modified to improve accessibility. Accessible restroom and drinking fountains are available within the fort.

Photographs and written text are available for inaccessible interior spaces, and a self-guided audio tour is available.
